Many others gave great advice on dealing with defiance. I would like to give you something else to think about.
I have a headstrong 7yo son. He and I are both first-born children and we tend to clash because we both want to be in charge. Yes, I am in charge, but there are just somethings that I *want* to make him do that in the big scheme of things are just not that important.
I realized I was trying to exert too much control in areas that were really very trivial. For example, I (now) won't fuss with a kid about a bath--let her deal with the consequences of being dirty. She'll figure out pretty soon that it is more pleasant to be clean! (Also, maybe she feels baths are "babyish" and would rather take a shower?)
