They really needed some time to transition. I'd tell them I was setting the timer for 3 minutes, and when it beeped, they were to set the table (or whatever). It worked amazingly well. I think it gives them time to think about the request, and come to terms with the fact that it is in their best interest to cooperate. Otherwise, their kneejerk response was "NO" but they didn't leave themselves an out. Or something.
I really don't know why it worked. But our lives were so much easier when I used that timer!
