I am currently trying this. I am a flutist & have hung around violinists in my church orchestra a lot. I have been able to teach myself on my husband's violin (actually, he's a cellist) but it's really because I know musically what I'm looking for & have observed violinists. It has increased my respect for my vioinist friends tremendously. It's hard!! My dd, who I want to do this with, got stomach flu right when I got these so I haven't had much of a chance to work with her. I'm really thinking I need an actual teacher though. I cannot tell if she is holding the violin correctly with her chin & if she needs a shoulder pad. The pictures in the book are hand drawn and not always easy to decipher what is wanted. I have looked up several photographs on various websites that were more helpful. Even the books themselves really assume that you will use them with a teacher at some point.
I don't think someone without much muscial experience would be able to do this.
