CHOW and SOTW 2. I have only looked through them both, just started reading CHOW to my son this week.
A few differences: CHOW is one book to cover prehistory through current times. There is much less detail than in SOTW, and not as much information on civilizations outside Europe, although there is some. SOTW takes four books to cover ancient through current times, and there is a lot more detail and info on other cultures.
CHOW seems to have a somewhat "patronizing" style to the writing. It doesn't seem to bother my son, but I'm not crazy about it. Some of the chapters have introductory paragraphs that are kind of strange, IMHO. I skip them.
Both are enjoyable narratives, make history more interesting than a textbook, and give a good history overview to grammar age kids.
If I had to pick only one, I'd go with SOTW. Plus, the activity guide is great.
