Scheduling question: If you school for 5-6 hours or more per day, how do you schedule that? (m)

Do you do it all at once, or do you break it up during the day? I'm asking because until now, (through grade 5) we've been able to school from 9:00-11:30, then take a break from 11:30-2:00 for lunch, going outside, running errands, etc. then coming back at 2:00 for history/science for another hour or so, plus an hour of independent reading. I really enjoyed having that break, being outside, and getting things done during that time, and the kids liked it too.

But, this year, looking at my 6th grader's schedule with the increased workload, I'm not sure that will work anymore. His work will likely take him about 6 hours this year, so even beginning at 8:00, and taking a 30 min. break for lunch, that would take straight through until 2:30. That seems like such a long stretch of time to work straight through. But there doesn't seem to be time to take a break in there, either. Even a 1.5 hour break would take us all the way to 4:00 to finish schoolwork, and that seems too late in the day.

So those of you who have kids who spend 5-6 hours or more on schoolwork, do they work straight through like that? Or do you take a break and come back to something later in the afternoon?

I'd be interested in seeing anyone else's schedule as well.

Thanks!
Erica
