and let the younger opt out when she needs to. I would have used the level 1 for my ds in first grade had they been available so many years ago.
I like to keep my dc in the same science and history cycle, but not necessarily the same books. One summer my oldest was doing the chemistry section of Rainbow, my neighbor's son was doing that with us and using RS4K (which had just been published), and my dd was doing extra experiments with us using fun with Atoms and Molecules. I could talk chemistry with all three kids. They had resources to use at each of their levels.
If you are trying to keep your book purchases down, then simply get the materials that fit your ds best. You can help with explanations for your dd.
