A model is given for each writing lesson. The student defines and finds synonyms for a list of vocabulary words taken from the story, does a "key-word" outline similar to IEW, and rewrites the story in their own words.
I would say that CW is the most "classical" of the writing programs you mentioned. It is a *very* meaty program, once you get into Homer. I would say that it is also the most teacher-intensive. (This one is my personal favorite.)
IEW is dependent upon a series of DVD's for providing the bulk of the instruction. The syllabus is just that - a syllabus. It offers basic guidelines, but cannot be used without the DVD's. I cannot comment further, since it has been quite a while since we used this program, and we only got up to Unit V.
