make sure he never enjoys reading :-o
Do you know why he doesn't like to read? Is he having difficulty? Is it possible he needs more phonics instruction?
I have to also say that I would not have required an 8yo to read on his own. I'd be reading aloud to him, and having him read aloud to me, although probably from his history or science or even a reader, not from a trade book.
But I wouldn't get out those R&S workbooks, nope.
