When we went through Cycle 3, my oldest two were in 5th grade and 3rd grade. I've listed the books we read aloud and enjoyed, as well as some that my 5th grade ds read independently.

William Bradfor, Pilgrim Boy- RA (also easy for independent reading -- print is larger than usual)

Duel in the Wilderness - 5th grade ds read this and liked it

Johnny Tremain - began as a RA, 5th grade ds finished on his own

Carry on, Mr. Bowditch - great RA! (This was my personal favorite of the year.)

Seaman: The Dog Who Explored the West... - fun RA that covers all aspects of the L&C expedition

The Sign of the Beaver - RA

The Courage of Sarah Noble - 3rd grade ds read this

The Boy in the Alamo - very engaging RA

Landmark: The Pioneers Go West - (end of cycle 3 or beginning of cycle 4) RA

We also read several Jean Fritz books. Her books are great!

HTH,
Julie
