I am using CKEB with my 3rd grader and 1st grade twins this year. I use it mainly as a spine for my little ones. My 3rd grader gets more out of it. I still have to write down her vocabulary definitions, and she doesn't do all the research activities. I've always said that CKEB is more suitable for a 5th grader to use independently.
I believe CKEB was ideally writen for grades 4-6. Yes, there are activity suggestions for younger children included. Since CKEES is recommended for grades 5-?, I speculate that the language of the reading portion would be more difficult. You may find yourself having to reword the content for your son to understand. I have to do that for my twins now. Your son might not be able to take advantage of the quizzes and tests as well.
OTOH, buy it if you plan on using CKEES when you cycle back through in 4 years. Use it casually as a spine now with fun supplements (books, videos, field trips, lapbooks, crafts, experiments, etc). When you cycle back to it, have him use it independently with extra books for added depth.
