My daughter asked to learn to read at 4. We started using OPGTR. She learned the poems that go with each letter sound by heart easily. She knows her letter sounds quite well.
Then we started putting together the CVC words. She sounded out the words and did well with the CVC word families.
Then I noticed as we moved on to reading CVC words in sentences, she seemed to be guessing at the ending. She sounds out the first letter and the vowel, but then seems to expect that the ending will be the same as the last word we just read in the sentence.
We took a break for a few months because she seemed to be doing so much guessing, and I thought maybe she just wasn't ready.
She has been consistently asking me to continue teaching her ever since.
We started up again this week, and she did the exact same thing. Guessing at the endings. I ask her to sound it out and she will still say the ending of the word before. I hope this is making sense.
I like OPGTR, but maybe this isn't the program for us? I am open to trying other things, but don't want to be doing the same thing with a different book.
Can someone offer me some suggestions on what I can do differently to help her?
This is the first child I have taught to read, and I have to admit I am terrified of messing up.
Thanks,
Jane
