Is Chalkdust a spiral program?..

I'm looking at changing from MUS to Chalkdust or TT. I've heard a lot of good things about Chalkdust and like that it teaches the "why". For my son that's very important. I need to know if it is a spiral approach or a mastery. My son does better with mastery. Any suggestions?
