We started out with Iliad and Odyssey and had Cliff's notes, Sparks notes, WEM notes, "invitation to the Classics" notes - now about 1/2 way through the Ancients, we don't use anything - just a highlighter :)
If you think they will be a stretch for your student, you might want to start with the novels - say Jane Austen - to get their feet wet. My 15 yo dd has loved the ancients though!
