Are you thinking of a particular subject? History? Literature? Science? That would make a difference.
If my son is studying, say, Reconstruction in the south after the Civil War, I might have him write an essay about the effects of Radical Reconstruction, making sure he is defending a thesis (I did do this, just a few weeks ago :-) ). For literature this week, he is writing about how John Donne's use of rhetorical conceit differs from other types of extended metaphors.
In other words, I don't try to come up with essay topics that aren't somehow related to what he is studying.
