sorry to keep butting in, but could you use some living books along with the textbooks? Could you incorporate some of TOG, the parts you like and then use textbooks for the rest? What didn't they like about TOG? Was there too much reading not enough? Is there anything you could add to it or take away from it to make it more enjoyable for them? Just trying to find a way for you to use a curriculum that you obviously like. I honetly don't think there's anything wrong with using just textbooks if that's what works for you.
