Most colleges want to see at least two years of the same language, proving that the student progressed beyond the beginner level. Some colleges want 3+ years in the same language, particularly for certain majors.
I'd suggest sticking with the same language for as long as possible. If you want to explore other languages, do them in addition to the "major" language.
