Well, I used to wear more make-up than I do...

In Reply to: Moms of Girls: Did any of you choose for your daughters not to wear make-up after the age of 13? Reasons? If so, when will you permit it? TIA posted by Janet

And I was one of those teens who walked around looking like a clown. LOL. Now, though, only once in a while do I wear foundation (very sheer) and mascara with a barely there lipstick/gloss. Anyway, my 18 year old has never expressed an interest in make-up. She does wear lip gloss sometimes and makes sure her eyebrows are plucked and enjoys nail polish once in a while. When she has a boy coming over, I know in advance because she spends more time on her hair, clothes, etc. So, she is interested in her appearance, but she doesn't tie her looks to make-up, which I think is good. My 8 and 10 year old have Chapsticks and some of these kiddie type lip glosses, which I am not opposed to as long as they aren't shiny and obvious. That said, I have decided that if they really want to wear make-up, it should wait until they are older, maybe 16. I know, mean mom here. ;) But, IMHO, why not save some things to do later? And if they do wear it, I hope that I have been able to instill in them that they are truly lovely as they are without any embellishment. I know it's a feminine thing, and I'm all for looking pretty and feminine, but somewhere along the way, I've concluded that make-up often makes people look worse than better, especially heavy foundation and obvious colors. (Sure, with acne issues or other skin problems or even stage performances, it can be a good thing.) For me, letting go of all this make-up has been liberating. Really. I love getting haircuts, facials, love nice clothing, even enjoy jewelry to an extent, but make-up just makes my skin feel icky for the most part, even expensive stuff. And again, I do not want my daughters to feel they need make-up to enhance their appearance. Finally, some young girls in heavy make-up often have sexy age-inappropriate clothing to boot, attempting to carry off a much more mature look than their tender years. IMHO growing up faster than they need to.

Please bear in mind, this is just my humble opinion...
