Not really a "looking back" vision, but here are my two cents...

My fifth grade daughter is a strong developing writer (published in about six different magazines, first place winner in creative writing contest, etc). I would say that she writes well because she reads a lot, and she has time and motivation to practice her craft, not because of the various writing curricula we have used over the years.

So I would make sure there is time to read good fiction and non-fiction, and show the student places to submit written work so that they can try their hands at getting published.

If you would like information about any of these opportunities for writing, let me know;
