In Reply to: Planning ahead for 9th next year- I would love to see schedules of what you are doing, if you don't mind sharing. I am particularly confused about history. nm posted by Ang in TX
American History/Literature-
---Homegrown course covering five significant "social justice" issues in American history through readings from the period and historical novels. We used Joy Hakim's "Freedom: A History of US" as a reference/spine. My daughter read 17 books, watched assorted films and documentaries, and did several field trips.
Anthropology 1: Intro to Archeology-
---"Out of the Past," an introductory college text, plus membership in two local anthropology/archaeology organizations.
Art Appreciation: Nineteenth Century-
---Approrpiate sections of "Annotated Mona Lisa," supplemented with field trips, videos and hands-on projects.
Biology w/Lab-
---"Biology:Visualizing Life" (Holt). I ended up creating my own lab "program" to accompany this text.
Choir-
---Membership in two local choirs.
Geometry-
---Florida Virtual School online course
Latin 1-
---Oxford Latin Book 1
Music Appreciation-
---Second half of "Classic Tunes and Tales," plus attending series of educational programs through the local opera company and assorted other live performances.
Theater Arts 1: Theater Survey-
---Another "home-grown" course, grounded upon season tickets for the local Shakespeare Festival and the Broadway touring companies, plus assorted videos on the history of theater and just attending lots and lots of shows.
In terms of daily schedules, I leave that mostly to her. I give her a list of weekly goals in each subject, and she figures out how long she wants to spend on each subject each day. In general, she sits down to desk work about 9:00 and works until 12:00. She often reads or continues to work on a project over lunch, then comes back and wraps things up about 3:00. She tries to do the most challenging subjects (usually math and foreign language) first thing in the morning and save more relaxing reading and hands-on projects for the afternoon.
Hope that helps!
