I have both (and I have taught both). Both are good, solid algebra programs. My personal preference is Lial--the text is better at self-teaching and providing examples. Both have solutions and video support options.
For all practical purposes they cover the same material (concepts).
Saxon has a wider variety of Geometry problems --Lial does incorporate some Geometry (use of formulas) but not to the extent that Saxon does.
Lial's offers a wider variety of word problems--but Saxon is not weak on them either.
These programs are VERY VERY DIFFERENT in approach and teaching style.
