I think it sounds like a great experiment to help him become autonomous ... (m)

When my 16yo G was 14 and in 9th grade I stepped WAY BACK from micromanaging her day. I gave her the big picture of what I wanted her to get done and I made that very clear BUT THEN I allowed her to parse out her assignments daily, weekly, whatever. I allowed her to decide how long to linger over her various subjects. I allowed her to manage her schedule and workload.

Do you know what? She did it. She did it DIFFERENTLY than I would have initially advised, but she did it beautifully. Yesterday she and I spoke of the hard time her younger bro is having adjusting to his workload this (8th gr)year - she reminded me how hard SHE had it in 8th grade when I was still "lording it over" her (said surprisingly respectfully LOL) and how great was her sense of accomplishment when later in 9th grade I "let her take the reins" and she DID IT.

So, no I don't this is "like unschooling" I think it's good parenting, allowing them to try it out and you may be pleasantly surprised that 1-not only will the work get done but 2-the INTANGIBLE things he learns and develops as a result.

My two cents. :o)
