Eventhough I am not using Lial's, In your place I would take advantage of the lessons left of MUS and assign few exercises from Lial's for: wet the math taste buds, ease into it for you and him and not overload him.
If you assign a page only ask half the odds or even numbered problems and if he does good, celebrate. If the % of rights is to low, discuss the mistakes, walk the problems through and assigned the other half the next day....I say a little at a time and a lot of compliments and assurance.

For what is worth...I am having some toughy times with my dd (9th) also. She is great in math but some concepts she did not grasp and instead of forcing her (and have WWIII) we are reenforcing basics concept that she NEED/HAVE to know and I give exercises here and there...more for her to see and know that she can do it. Eventhough I would love her be doing what the grade says she should, I made the decision to slow down and work with MY dd needs and stop looking to what everybody else what doing and where their kids where.
The tough road is to get the basics down as easy as breathing, the rest falls in place so easy and sometimes by itself...so there shall be peace in this house.
