Just as important to writing is reading well-written and mature prose. Young people absorb quite a bit from literature.

Seems your girls need to be taught some sentence variety. I would hand their work back after the first draft, along with a sentence style sheet, and ask them to rework the sentences so that they each reflect a different style.

I would then hand back the draft and ask them to include at least one complex or compound/complex sentence.

Finally, I would hand it back once more and ask them to add appropriate transitions in order to make the content flow.

One guide to help with this is a book called "Sentence Composing". You can pick and choose what needs work and have them do some of the exercises.

P.S. I would also recommend the book: "A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs." The two other guide books in this series are also very handy (Guide to Transitions and Punctuation).
