What, specifically, about writing are you trying to teach?
Writing means three things:
Mechanics (punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc.)
Structure (topic sentences, intro. paragraphs, conclusions, etc.)
Style (flow, description, word selection, etc.)
You need to attack each of these seperately to teach, the reinforce the concepts together. I think you'll find teaching writing much easier if you break down which "thing" you're trying to attack and not to try to do it all at once.
