Your son may enjoy his non-engineering friends, but he needs to find a group of engineering folks with whom to study. They will keep each other on task and help their work load move forward more efficiently since, theoretically, three heads are better than one. Beginning courses for engineering often require a lot of head scratching. Freshman year is a great time to learn to work with future engineers on how to talk their way through situations, the way many engineers work in the real world.

It is easy for me from my perch as a former calculus instructor at an engineering school to say block out time on Saturday for your friends or plan on taking a break at dinner to see them. I agree with Bev's advice that now is the time to be in professors' offices. I loved the kids who would follow me back to mine for clarification on a problem or two. Never hurts to get on a prof's good side!

Best to your eldest son,
Jane
