well, if he couldn't read them, could he listen to them on tape or mp3?
You would have to spend a little more time picking books, and unfortunately, Jeff Baldwin doesn't include too many novels. And I am thinking you wouldn't want to do more than 10? Do you want it to be 1 one year overview of history as well?
first quarter - Ancients
how to be your own selfish pig -
fine for all three, no adaptions
Odyssey
fagles translation, ian mckellan does audio FANTASTIC
Julius Caesar or Antony by Plutarch
Julius Caesar or Antony & Cleopatry by Shakespeare
(very fun to see how Shakespeare steals from Plutarch)
2nd Quarter - Medieval
Koran - selections
Compact guide to world religions - section on Islam
(know nothing about this, from baldwin site)
Beowulf
easy for all to read
YOU can read the tolkein book from baldwin site to help you with discussion (i love an excuse to buy books!)
Magna Charta
easy for all to read, this is more history
Canterbury Tales - selections
again, in a modern translation or read aloud i think they would be fine for all. i know my sixth grader is going to read the prologue and nun's priest's tale next year.
Sword in the Stone (older kids might read all of Once and Future King)
3rd quarter - Reformation/Renaissance/Early Modern
Lend Me your Ears
(speech by Luther, discussion guide from Baldwin site)
Dr. Faustus
(short read, read it out loud with everyone taking parts) discussion guide from Baldwin site
I would have everyone research a Renaissance artist and do a report/project.
If your particular religious affiliation had anything important happen at this time, read a biography.
something about early Canadian history - i know nothing, sorry.
you have already read frankenstein and dr. jekyll and mr. hyde which would have fit here.
Great Expectations or Oliver Twist. might have to get the book on tape for 7th grader or give the older ones some short stories or extra history to read while 7th grader plows through Dickens
4th Quarter
(sorry, again, i am coming from a us perspective) I would say tom sawyer (is there a canadian equivalent)
all quiet on the western front (maybe for the older ones)(there's a great YA historical fiction about a young canadian boy joining ww1. i really liked it, you would need to pre-read.
all could read some poems - wilfred owen for anti-war ones and some pro-wars as well. which have the christian world view?
a separate peace for ww2
animal farm (NOT 1984)
Of course, I don't know your son. But wouldn't it be more fun to have them all doing the same thing and talking about it. And of course, you might have to throw in something to beef up the history, and there's lots of movies, and fun stuff to read that they could read on their own level.
is that any clearer?
