That if a student plans to go on to a 4 year college after high school, most colleges/universities want to see a strong math course (read, not consumer math) taken in their senior year. In order to do that, math really needs to be a subject taken each year, in some form, in high school.
I'm still on the fence about courses taken in 8th counting. I really appreciate this discussion!
