I'm glad this is generating some discussion; I appreciate all the replies. Rest assured that at this point, I'm asking from a merely hypothetical perspective. I'm not concerned about having my children acculumate a boatload of extra high school credits, nor am I considering it a "race".

Regarding your first paragraph though, Gwen, I don't entirely agree with your assumption that a child who takes algebra in 7th grade will likely not drop math. Yes, s/he may be keenly interested in the subject and pursue advanced calculus, for example. Of course if that's the case, if math coursework is undertaken throughout the duration of high school, middle school credits aren't worth mentioning.

On the other hand, I think there are plenty of students who do fine at math and are able to study algebra and geometry prior to high school without an eye toward advanced math. In fact, such a student may take those courses prior to high school in order to pursue other areas of greater interest to her/him. In which case one would want to note, on the transcript, the math studied prior to high school.

Cheers,
Colleen
