and in most cases, math and foreign language can be counted on a transcript even if done in 8th grade. It's less clear about history and English, because colleges may not think younger students capable of high school level analytical skills. I think it just needs to be stated, although if a student is doing, say, algebra 2 in 9th grade, it's pretty obvious that he did algebra 1 in junior high.
The problem comes when some colleges (not all, but a few) ONLY want to see credits in the four years prior to graduation, so if your son or daughter took 2 years of language (high school level) in 7th-8th grade, you are correct that it will look as if he or she never studied said language. If, of course, the student goes on to a 3rd and 4th year (or more) in high school, it won't be a problem. My son will take Latin through Latin VI in high school, having taken 1 and 2 previous to high school, so that should be obvious on his transcript.
There are no hard and fast answers, sad to say, but it might help to contact a few colleges that you think might interest you in the future--I know it's a long way off, though! It's great that you are thinking of these things now.
