My experience in teaching writing is that if you wade through this with him a few times--writing down all the thoughts in order--he will begin to do it on his own in his head. It takes patience on your part. Do it a few times and then stop. Pick and choose a few examples after that, and have him reword just those sentences. I'm guessing what seems a long, painful process now will just be a problem he "once had" not all that long from now.
At least that is what I've found with my dc.
