If he is frustrated with Saxon and wants to just 'walk away' let him.
Saxon is good but it uses 'different' methods and the way that some problems are worded/worked out are 'unique'....there are MANY differet approaches and not one is the 'only way'...but still...
If I had who became bogged down--making less than a 90% average as a homeschooler--I would suggest that they change programs for Pre-Calc and above.
The Lial text may seem 'Greek' to him at first--but once he gets used to the layout and the lesson format I bet he finds he has a good foundation --he just needed additional support!
