some are willing to order any test you want and give you a proctor. Others will only administer tests they already offer, even though the College Board is perfectly agreeable to let them test any kid, even if they didn't offer the AP class at their school.
The process is a pain: you call the College Board with your zip code and they'll tell you the schools in that zip that have an AP coordinator listed with them (and these are not always current). Further, the CB has no info about which exams each school is offering, so they can't help you narrow the field.
You then call the school and ask if they will offer that exam and if they are willing to test your kid. Most of the time you have to gently educate the coordinator about the fact that they *can* order a test for your student, even though their school didn't offer the course. Since many aren't willing to go to that trouble, then you have to choose another nearby zipcode and keep going through the process till you find a willing school.
As an example, there is a school 30 min. away where ds tested last year. The coordinator was very nice to us. However, this year (since they don't offer the course ds needs to test) she did not want to make special arrangements for him. We're making a 2-hour drive to get this service and this coordinator said, "ANY exam he ever wants, we'll do it." *And* they will supply the proctor free of charge!
So hunt and peck--and best of luck!!
