I don't know your 9th grader, but mine would do better trying to get thru Spielvogel's World History the Human Odyssey. Essential similar information, but easier and designed for high school, as opposed to college. I wonder if you could purchase both books (pricey...but...) and just assign his reading from the Odys. book, but use the WestCiv book for the study questions, etc.
Another thought: Does he do okay with HEARING the text read aloud? Would that make a difference? I just think MY 9th grader (reads pretty well, but sometimes struggles with comprehension) would have a hard time with the WC text.
