I took my daughter through it. I couldn't bear the thought of taking my son through it.
However, it's helpful to have a base vocabularly before you start learning grammar. As the start of learning a language, I think the Learnables or Rosetta Stone isn't a bad start. However, I don't believe the claims that these programs are high school level. You need, at least, a grammar workbook. The AMSCO books (French First Year, etc.) is one solution--although it is not exciting.
Perhaps someone can comment on what level is appropriate for US high school credit. DD is doing grade 9 French through a Canadian on-line high school. She had already done two full levels of Learnables (both sets), some Rosetta Stone, some workbook work, a year with a tutor, etc--and is still finding grade 9 French a reach.
